Sydney B Scott, Coleraine farm shop, wholesale fruit and veg, vegetables, fresh food Coleraine

Our Story.

After returning home from completing their service in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force in 1951, Sydney Scott and his older brother Wilson were given bicycles by their uncle Robbie, who owned a hardware and toy shop in Coleraine. Having a natural instinct for business, they attached suitcases to the back of the bicycles and filled them with all sorts of things - anything from shoe polish and tools to children's dolls and spinning tops.

After developing their business to where the bicycles could no longer cope, they opened a hardware and toy shop of their own. Eventually, they sold the business. From here, Sydney began to work for ‘Bate's’, a local fruit & vegetable company in Coleraine.

Sydney saw a huge potential in the trade and decided to begin his own wholesale fruit and vegetable store. With £14 to his name, Sydney borrowed his first lorry from a local businessman and headed to Belfast to find products to fill it. Here he met Frank.E.Benner. After speaking with Sydney, Frank could see his drive and passion. He allowed Sydney to fill his van with as much stock as he could take, allowing Sydney the opportunity to pay him back when he sold his product. That investment proved to be worthwhile as Sydney went nowhere else for produce right until the day Benner ceased trading.

With almost 70 years in business the ethos and standards that Sydney began with are something we proudly continue to maintain.
